  16.          Microsoft Doubles Your Disk Space with MS-DOS 6
  17.        New version features easy-to-use memory management,
  18.                new backup and anti-virus protection
  19.      MISSISSAUGA, Ont.  March 30, 1993  Microsoft Canada Inc.
  20.      today introduced the next generation of its MS-DOS operating
  21.      system software   software which is currently used in
  22.      approximately ninety-five per cent of the world's personal
  23.      computers.
  24.      New MS-DOS 6 solves common computer problems, such as full
  25.      hard disks and memory management, safely and easily by
  26.      doubling a PC's available disk space, freeing conventional
  27.      memory, protecting data from viruses and accidental
  28.      deletions, increasing performance and much more. MS-DOS 6
  29.      was designed not only to benefit MS-DOS users, but to be a
  30.      dramatic enhancement for Microsoft Windows users as well.
  31.      As of March 31, the MS-DOS 6 upgrade will be available from
  32.      resellers across Canada at a suggested promotional price of
  33.      $59.99 until May 31, and for a suggested retail price of
  34.      $155.95 thereafter.
  35.      "In 1991, lack of conventional memory was the most common
  36.      user problem, and MS-DOS 5 addressed it head-on. Now,
  37.      because of the popularity of the Windows operating system
  38.      and the rise of portable computing, tight disk space is the
  39.      biggest user problem. MS-DOS 6 addresses that problem
  40.      directly by tightly integrating compression with the
  41.      operating system to make it safe and easy. That tight
  42.      integration make MS-DOS 6 unique among desktop operating
  43.      systems," said Brad Silverberg, vice president of personal
  44.      systems at Microsoft Corporation.
  45.      "In addition, MS-DOS 6 was designed from the beginning to
  46.      support users of Windows. Key features such as DoubleSpace,
  47.      SmartDrive and Backup were all designed to integrate with
  48.      Windows and provide those users with the same benefits of
  49.      doubled disk space, more safety and better performance."
  50.      "We have received wide-spread support from many of our
  51.      industry partners," said Marc Camm, systems group product
  52.      manager for Microsoft Canada. "All of the top 400 PC makers
  53.      have demonstrated intent to ship the new software with their
  54.      products."
  55.      Sales momentum has been building in anticipation of this
  56.      announcement. According to Alec Saunders, MS-DOS product
  57.      manager for Microsoft Canada, orders have already been
  58.      placed for more than 250,000 units in Canada.

  60.      Benefits Include Integrated Compression and Easy-to-use
  61.                         Memory Management
  62.      MS-DOS 6 offers a wide range of new enhancements. Key
  63.      features include the following:
  64.             DoubleSpace integrated compression. With files and
  65.      applications growing in size, even today's larger hard
  66.      disks are easily filled. DoubleSpace, which can double
  67.      the capacity of the average hard disk, works
  68.      automatically and transparently  a boon for the Windows
  69.      userCompression results may vary depending on system
  70.      configuration. .  Because it is integrated with MS-DOS,
  71.      DoubleSpace is the easiest and safest way to increase
  72.      disk space. It spares users the problems typically
  73.      associated with compression, such as drive-letter
  74.      swapping and the need to continuously synchronize system
  75.      files; MS-DOS 6 is alone among desktop operating systems
  76.      in providing this tight integration. DoubleSpace even
  77.      recovers automatically if the power accidentally goes off
  78.      while it is in the middle of compressing a user's disk.
  79.             Easy-to-use memory management. MS-DOS 6 dramatically
  80.        improves on the memory management introduced in MS-DOS 5
  81.        so that users have more room to run their applications.
  82.        MemMaker, a memory optimization program, is easy enough
  83.        for anyone to use and provides up to 100K more
  84.        conventional memory than MS-DOS 5.
  85.        In addition, EMM386, the upper memory provider, has been
  86.        enhanced to provide more upper memory for programs.
  87.             Backup for MS-DOS and Backup for Windows. The new
  88.        Backup provides an easy way for users to protect their
  89.        data, and it comes in both a full-screen MS-DOS version
  90.        and a Windows version. Higher speed, file compression,
  91.        support for different backup types and many other new
  92.        features make the new Backup a great improvement. Backup,
  93.        as well as Defrag, is licensed from Symantec Corporation.
  94.             Anti-Virus for MS-DOS and Windows. Anti-virus
  95.        protects against viruses that can damage data. Like
  96.        Backup, it comes in both a full-screen MS-DOS version and
  97.        a Windows version, and can detect more than 800 different
  98.        viruses as well as clean infected files and provide
  99.        resident virus protection. Anti-virus as well as
  100.        Undelete, is licensed from Central Point Software, Inc.
  101.             Undelete for MS-DOS and Windows. Undelete lets users
  102.        recover accidentally deleted files. Greatly enhanced from
  103.        MS-DOS 5, Undelete now features a Windows interface and
  104.        also adds an additional level of protection, Delete
  105.        Sentry, which significantly improves the chance of
  106.        recovering a deleted file, even on a network drive.
  107.             Improved SmartDrive. Caching, which stores commonly
  108.        used files in memory,  speeds hard disk access. The
  109.        enhanced, high-performance Smartdrive cache of MS-DOS 6
  110.        greatly improves performance by write-caching in addition
  111.        to the read-caching offered in the SmartDrive of MS-DOS
  112.        5. The improved SmartDrive was also designed to integrate
  113.        tightly with both Windows and DoubleSpace compression.
  114.             Defrag. System performance slows as files fragment,
  115.        that is, as parts of files are stored in locations
  116.        scattered across the hard disk and it takes more time for
  117.        the file to be assembled and retrieved for use. By moving
  118.        all parts of a file to a contiguous location, Defrag
  119.        boosts hard disk performance. And because it's designed
  120.        for MS-DOS 6, Defrag can invisibly clean up uncompressed
  121.        disks as well as compressed DoubleSpace drives.
  122.             Multi-configuration support. MS-DOS 6 lets users
  123.        choose from multiple configurations when starting their
  124.        systems and is ideal for users of portable machines with
  125.        docking stations. Users can also use clean start to
  126.        bypass both CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT during systems
  127.        start-up, or they can execute selected portions of these
  128.        files using interactive start.
  129.             Other features. MS-DOS 6 also includes Interlink, a
  130.        file-transfer utility, a full-screen on-line help system
  131.        that documents every command and device driver in full,
  132.        and new MOVE, DELTREE and CHOICE commands.

  134.     Utilities Vendors to Provide Add-on Products for MS-DOS 6
  135.      "MS-DOS 6 with DoubleSpace has made it practical for us to
  136.      develop the new Norton Utilities 7.0 with full data recovery
  137.      and disk optimization on MS-DOS 6 compressed volumes," said
  138.      Rod Turner, Symantec's vice president of the Peter Norton
  139.      Group.  "We expect tremendous end-user demand for these new
  140.      features."
  141.      "We are proud that Microsoft standardized on our Anti-Virus
  142.      technology for inclusion in MS-DOS 6," said Chuck
  143.      Boesenberg, president and CEO of Central Point Software.
  144.      "And we think MS-DOS 6 is a great opportunity for us to
  145.      reach new users."

  147.    Broad Retail and PC Manufacturer Distribution Now Underway
  148.      Like MS-DOS 5, this latest version of MS-DOS is being
  149.      distributed in two forms. The MS-DOS 6 upgrade installs only
  150.      on systems that already have MS-DOS 2.11 or higher or on
  151.      OS/2. The MS-DOS 6 Upgrade is  available in multiple-user
  152.      configurations including, for the first time, a retail three-
  153.      user pack. All promotional pricing will be in effect until
  154.      May 31, 1993.
  155.      MS-DOS 6 for new MS-DOS users is available only through PC
  156.      manufacturers for purchase along with new computer systems.
  157.      It is available for license either in a base configuration,
  158.      which includes all features except DoubleSpace, Backup and
  159.      Anti-Virus, or in the base configuration plus enhanced
  160.      tools, which includes all features and is expected to be the
  161.      most popular configuration choice of PC manufacturers and customers.
  162.      MS-DOS 6 and the MS-DOS 6 upgrade are available immediately
  163.      in Arabic, Dutch, English, French, German, Hebrew, Italian,
  164.      Spanish, and Swedish, and are scheduled to be available
  165.      within 30 days in Danish, Finnish, Norwegian and Portuguese.
